Cruise Ship Season in Newport - Leading them into Port!

Cruise Ship season in Newport, Rhode Island started yesterday, May 1, 2012, with a visit from Holland America's Maasdam.  Ever wonder how these large ships are guided through the waters of Narragansett Bay and into Newport?  This is the job of Pilot Boats.  Pilot Boats help guide large ships into port all throughout the country.

In Newport, it is the job of the Northeast Marine Pilots.  NE Marine also serve Long Island Sound and Buzzards Bay.  Next time you are see a Cruise Ship leaving Newport or a Car Carrier heading up Narragansett Bay look for the grey, guiding Pilot Boat, it's sure to be close by!
